SMC has gone through an extensive environmental approval process for the flagship Weld Range Project.
Although the project is currently on hold, the lengthy approvals process is still being finalised.
SMC is committed to a transparent approval process. The company continues to consult with decision making authorities and engage with landholders and local communities to ensure they are properly informed about the Project and its progress.
This has so far included a Public Environmental Review process which allows all stakeholders to provide input into the process. SMC is committed to developing the Project in a sustainable manner, mitigating any environmental impacts by responsible management measures during the design, construction and operation of the Project.
A comprehensive Environmental Management System will be implemented to manage the key environmental issues and procedures and an Environmental Management Plan will be prepared as a component of this.
This will ensure detailed management plans for flora, fauna, air quality, water management, waste management, bushfire control and rehabilitation following closure of the mine.
SMC has had ongoing engagement with the Wajarri Yamatji People regarding the Weld Range Project.
